Cod Liver Oil and Fibromyalgia

  • Sharebar

Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by chronic pain and inflammation throughout the body. This health condition is becoming more common, but the problem is that many medical professionals are still unsure about the best treatments to reduce the pain and help the patient find relief. There is no known cure for fibromyalgia, so most doctors focus on prescribing medications to treat the symptoms and make the patient more comfortable.

Even though there is not a cure for fibromyalgia, information is coming to light that suggest that this health condition may be improved by taking fermented cod liver oil on a daily basis. Even though research still needs to be done in order to verify the efficacy of this natural remedy, there are several reasons why fermented cod liver oil may help to reduce the pain:

Essential Fatty Acids

It has been found that many people diagnosed with fibromyalgia have low amounts of omega-3 essential fatty acids, and those fatty acids are effective in reducing the amount of inflammation in the body. In fact, preliminary research done by the Fibromyalgia network found that increasing the consumption of essential fatty acids may help to reduce the pain that is experienced, especially in the shoulders and back area.

Because of our modern diet, most people are actually deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and they have too many omega-6 fatty acids. High amounts of omega-6′s have been linked with higher amounts of inflammation in the body, and higher amounts of omega-3′s have been linked with lower amounts of inflammation.

It is important to get the correct ratio of omega-6′s and omega-3′s, and the recommended ratio is 3:1 up to 5:1. In order to achieve this ratio, it is a good idea to consume fermented cod liver oil on a daily basis, and decrease the amount of unhealthy foods that are eaten because they are high in omega-6 fatty acids.

Vitamin D Deficiency

It is known that vitamin D deficiency can lead to muscle and bone pain, and some researchers are beginning to understand that vitamin D may also play a role in fibromyalgia pain. A study conducted at the Mayo Clinic found that patients with lower levels of vitamin D required higher doses of medication to control their pain.

It is difficult to get natural sources of vitamin D, and many people don’t spend enough time in the sun to synthesize the vitamin. So, it is necessary to take a proactive approach by taking fermented cod liver oil on a regular basis, because it has high levels of naturally occurring vitamin D. One dose of Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil provides 190% of the daily value that an adult needs.

Because fermented cod liver oil contains the essential fatty acids as well as food-based vitamin D, it may be one of the best natural remedies for fibromyalgia.
