An increasing number of people in westernized countries are being diagnosed with mental health conditions, which has led medical professionals to look for the source of the problem. It has been discovered that cod liver oil for mental health is a great way to improve a person’s overall mental health, and this natural remedy may be beneficial for many forms of mental health including: depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, and ADHD.

Mental Health and Diet

Researchers are discovering that our modern diet plays a big role in the development of mental health conditions. When highly processed foods, sugar, white flour, and unhealthy fats are consumed, the body is not receiving the proper balance of nutrition that is needed for optimal health– which can negatively impact mental health in several ways.

Essential Fatty Acids

One of the biggest imbalances that are occurring as a result of this unhealthy diet is the ratio of essential fatty acids that are consumed. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are needed, but the problem lies in the fact that many people are getting higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids at the same time as getting lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids tend to increase inflammation within the body, and omega-3 fatty acids are able to help with inflammation reduction.

This imbalance in essential fatty acids can cause many problems, and the best way to restore health is by balancing out the ratio of essential fatty acids that are consumed. It is important to note that essential fatty acids must be consumed, because the body is unable to produce omega-3 fatty acids when there is a deficiency.

Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids are Important

A deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids can negatively impact brain functioning, overall mental health, and development and growth within the body. Many people who have an omega-3 deficiency experience symptoms such as memory problems, mood swings, depression, lethargy or fatigue.

When omega-3′s are present in the body, they promote neuronal growth which is necessary to repair damage in the brain. These brain repair benefits are so effective, that some people refer to foods with omega-3 fatty acids as “brain food.”

Sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids is fermented cod liver oil. When cod liver oil is used on a regular basis, the balance of essential fatty acids is restored, which is an effective way to restore mental health as well.

Other sources of omega-3′s include: seafood (including oily fish, krill, and algae), some plants such as flax and chia seed, and certain nut and nut oils. Most people don’t eat enough of these foods, which means that their best option for omega-3 fatty acids is to use a supplement such as cod liver oil for mental health.

Omega-3′s are also available in other types of fish oil, although high quality cod liver oil is a preferred supplement because it also provides other important nutrients such as vitamins D and A. When fermented cod liver oil is used, many other micronutrients are available which can be very beneficial for overall health.

Cod Liver Oil Dosage Cautions

Even though many researchers have found that cod liver oil is beneficial for improving mental health conditions, it is important to note that the correct dosages need to be followed. Consuming too much cod liver oil can actually be a bad thing, and it may result in symptoms of depression and it can also cause an increase in a person’s risk of bleeding. So, be cautious about the amount of cod liver oil that is used. Those dosages should be based on the label, because they are determined by the amount of DHA and EPA that is present within the oil.
